International Mission Ministry

“Where in the world…” will Immanuel go next? The wheels are in motion to find a spot in the world where Immanuel can reach out and spread the Word. You are invited to participate!

The International Mission Committee is guided by the dream of John Sonnenday in his statement: "I hope our primary emphasis will be on building a relationship. I believe the greatest need in the world is for community -- meeting one another as equals. Therefore, I would hope that we might enter into a relationship in which we come together to learn from one another, with our focus at least as much on what we have to learn as on what we have to give... what the world needs from the church today primarily is for the church to be the church -- to be the one Body of Christ undivided by race, culture, nationality, social class or economic status."

Through the work of the Community Service & Action Committee, participation in local mission is extensive in the McLean, Northern Virginia and DC areas. And, for many years our Youth Program has sponsored summer “mission” trips in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to build and renovate homes under the auspices of Habitat for Humanity. See photos from the 2008 trip. In 2006, the youth sponsored a
Mission Trip to Honduras.

Art/Craft supply donations sought for mission trip
Beginning September 15th, Adele Ball will spend two and a half months living in Honduras as an art teacher in Students Helping Honduras’ orphanage, Copprome. She would love to represent Immanuel’s generosity by doing a craft supply drive the first two weeks in September. She will need things like paper, markers, crayons, fabric paints, fabric dyes, Elmer's glue, cardboard, and, especially crafty things such as sewing kits, PAINTS, buttons, old t-shirts or old socks for sock puppets, googly eyes, puffy paints, as well as art teaching books, and art textbooks. Boxes for your donations will be available in the Narthex and Meeting House on September 7th and 14th. Thank you for your help!

Peru Mission Trip, July 2007 & 2008
The past two summers, Pastor Aaron and other Immanuelites travelled to the foothills of the Andes to worship, pray, faith share, work and participate in fellowship with members of the Moyobamba Presbyterian Church. See trip photos: 2007    2008.

Additional Info on International Missions
In the early 1990’s, Immanuel sponsored the work of missionaries, Dr. & Mrs. Salvador de la Torre in their medical mission work in Zambia. Since their retirement, there has been no active international mission project.

The committee meets regularly -- check the church calendar for specific dates and times. For further information, please contact Scott Fisher or Bev Merson. We invite your input!

We have also identified opportunities for IPC members to become involved through travel, study and mission work. Please explore Travel with a Purpose to find an opportunity that best fits you.
