Chesterbrook Receives Award
The Virginia Commonwealth Council on Aging has chosen Chesterbrook Residences for the 2009 Best Practices Award in the Housing Category. The Chesterbrook Resident Council wanted to show their appreciation of the community partnership that went into the funding of Chesterbrook and to show how pleased they were to have their unique new home.

A condensation of the nomination reads, “The Chesterbrook Residences is the first and only mixed income assisted living facility in Fairfax County. The facility is the product of a unique community partnership that worked together for seven years to convert a gift of five acres of land into this special facility. With financial support from Fairfax County, the Virginia Housing Development Authority and more than one million dollars in private donations, the facility opened in late 2007. Of the 97 units available, 55% are offered to low income seniors at below market rates. Ongoing fundraising events assure that no resident has to leave because of financial concerns.” Director Marilen King has scheduled the presentation of the award on June 22nd at 9:30 a.m. at the Fairfax Government Center.
There is certain to be a celebration at Chesterbrook Residences!

Men's Club of Chesterbrook Residences

Robbie Robertson and Don DiLoreto organized a Men's Club at the Chesterbrook Residences a few months ago and it has blossomed into a weekly time of fun. The men meet every Tuesday at 10 in the morning to discuss a multitude of issues of interest. They are also available for solving of world problems! In addition to the weekly get togethers they enjoy lunches at area restaurants. This is known as "Local Outreach" with surprising results!

Corner store needs items
The Chesterbrook Corner Store opened in late August, selling cards, and small gifts as well as supplies like toothpaste, Kleenex, and paper towels. Items flew off the shelves, so we are looking for additional merchandise. If you have anything stored away in your “gift drawer” -- perhaps something you were given or purchased but then never used, or if you have a gently used item that you think the residents would like -- please contact Nancy Stansberry or leave it in the boxes at church. We are not able to accept clothing or large items as we have very limited space. And please, no Christmas items until closer to the holidays.

Volunteer opportunities available
Many volunteer opportunities are available at Chesterbrook. You can help at the front desk or in the gift shop, help with the knit and stitch group or on craft projects, play cards or run a bingo game, visit with residents, or accompany them on field trips. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Marriam Hameed, Activities Director, at (703) 531-0781, x. 109 or mhameed@cri-va.org.

If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Stansberry.
