Opportunities for Service

Outreach and service to others is an integral part of life at Immanuel. Our ministry to those outside of our church community is accomplished through various church groups involving all ages in both long and seasonal mission opportunities.

Community Service and Action
Encourages participation in and the charitable support of organizations in our local community. Using funds allocated to CS&A from Immanuel’s budget, along with proceeds from our annual auction, the Committee disburses funds to a variety of local organizations. We also organize collections of goods to provide needed supplies to such groups.

International Mission
Encourages the growth of the church in understanding our roles, responsibilities and opportunities in the global community. To accomplish this goal the committee has been establishing partnerships with organizations outside the US and contributes funds and goods to various organizations. Mission trips are sponsored and educational opportunities are routinely provided for the congregation.

“I Have a Dream” Program
Immanuel has launched a second “I Have A Dream” program for at-risk children in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The program is built around a covenant with the Dreamers and their families: If a young person successfully completes high school, Immanuel will help finance a college education or other post-secondary school technical training. In addition to funding the education, Immanuel members sponsor a Saturday tutoring program and provide support for the students and families.

McLean Interfaith Coalition
A collaboration of local faith based communities working together to sponsor and build houses with Northern Virginia Habitat for Humanity. Immanuel raises funds and actively participates in the building of the homes.

Youth Opportunities
Some of the ways in which youth participate in service at Immanuel include the Fannie Mae Walkathon which raises money for the District’s homeless population, regular events and summer tutoring with Langley Residential Support Services (for mentally challenged McLean residents), summer mission trips in the U.S. and overseas with Habitat for Humanity and other ministries, and participation in the Changing Lives tutoring program in Anacostia.
